Clearing clogged pores: Hemp oil and the oil cleansing method

Get rid of clogged pores once and for all! Hemp oil can actually cure your closed comedone acne safely, naturally, and forever.

The oil cleansing method seems almost counter-intuitive, especially if you have any kind of acne. I mean, putting oil on your face on purpose? Weird. BUT applying oil to the face actually helps dissolve the sebum plugs that form in your pores. It will also make your wrinkles less noticeable, and the massaging makes your botox last longer!!!!!

From Acne.org:

Oil dissolves oil. One of the most basic principals of chemistry is that “like dissolves like.” The best way to desolve a non-polar solvent like sebum/oil, is by using another non-polar solvent similar in composition: other oils. By using the right oils, you can cleanse your pores of dirt and bacteria naturally, gently and effectively, while replacing the dirty oil with beneficial ones extracted from natural botanicals, vegetables and fruit that heal, protect and nourish your skin. When done properly and consistently, the OCM can clear the skin from issues like oily skin, dry skin, sensitive skin, blackheads, whiteheads and other problems caused by mild to moderate acne–while leaving your skin healthy, balanced and properly moisturized.

The trick is to find the right kind of oil for your skin. You'll see a lot of advice about using castor oil and other types of oils, and that's okay, but for those of us with very clog-prone pores, it's best to stick to hemp or sunflower. I'll tell you why.

Two considerations: comedogenicity and fatty acid content (these two things are related)

What are whiteheads and blackheads, exactly?

Whiteheads and blackheads (Comedones) are thickened sebum that has become trapped in your pores.

Sebum and fatty acid content

Sebum is a fatty substance that is manufacured in the sebaceous gland within the pore (hair follicle). The sebum flows up along the hair shaft and spreads across the surface of the skin. This keeps the skin moist and provides a slightly acidic environment known as the acid mantle. The acid mantle helps to kill bacteria and maintain your skin's proper pH.

sebum production healthy skin

Among other things, sebum contains some proportion of linoleic and oleic acids, which are natural fatty acids.

Normal sebum has a higher proportion of linoleic acid, which is a thin, free-flowing fatty acid. Some of us have sebum with a higher proportion of oleic acid, however, which is a thicker and dryer fatty acid. Sebum with a higher proportion of oleic acid is MUCH more likely to clog the pores, because it is not free-flowing.

When sebum gets caught in the pore, the result is a blackhead (open comedone) or, if the pore closes around the clog, a whitehead (closed comedone). A closed comedone can then turn into a cyst.

If you have clogged pores and a DRY complexion, a low proportion of linoleic acid in your sebum is almost certainly the problem.

In order to FIX THIS PROBLEM, you must increase the proportion of linoleic acid to oleic acid in your skin, both topically and internally.

Comedogenicity

Comedogenicity refers to the likelihood of a substance to cause clogged pores. This relates in part to the proportion of linoleic to oleic acid in the substance.

Different substances have different comedogenicity ratings. If something is rated a 5, it means that it is very likely to clog pores. These substances are high in oleic acid. If something is rated a 0, then it will not clog pores. These substances are high in linoleic acid. Here's an excellent list: comedogenic ratings.

Most people can get away with using oils that are higher on the comedogenic scale, but if you are prone to clogged pores, it's important to stick with oils that are rated 0.

A few oils are rated 0 on the scale. These are sunflower, grapeseed, safflower, and hemp. I use hemp. I take a spoonful daily to get my dietary linoleic acid, and I use it as a moisturizer and cleanser for my face and body.

Topically, I use hemp oil in two ways. I use a drop or two as a moisturizer on my face after my cleansing and toner step, and i use it once or twice a week as a deep cleanser.

Please note that oils high in linoleic acid tend to be very volatile; they go rancid quickly. I keep mine in the freezer. This keeps it from going bad. I've had mine in there for 5 or 6 months and it's still fine. It will start to smell funny when it goes rancid, and you'll have to throw it out.

Benefits of hemp oil:

  • high in linoleic acid;
  • contains more essential fatty acids than ANY OTHER PLANT IN THE WORLD, meaning that it is super beneficial for your entire body, resulting in shiny, strong, healthy hair and skin;
  • anti-inflammatory;
  • non-greasy moisturizer;
  • healing properties for eczema, psoriasis, and any skin lesions;
  • makes a GREAT base for makeup.

The Hemp Oil Cleansing Routine

You don't have to remove your makeup to start, as this IS the cleanser!

  • Take a tablespoon or so of oil in your palm. Rub it in circles on your face.
    • It seems like a lot of oil, but that's okay.
  • Massage it into your face for at least 10 minutes.
    • You will start to feel the little sebum plugs coming out. They feel like little grains on your fingers.
  • Place a washcloth that you have soaked in water (as hot as you can stand it) over your face and let it steam until it grows cool.
  • Wipe your face with the washcloth.
  • Wet the washcloth again in hot water and steam one more time.
  • Wipe your face again.
    • It's really important to get all the oil off your face, so you may have to repeat the steam and wipe a few times.

I find that the best time to do this is in the shower. Your skin is warm and steamy and all your pores are open.

Watch the video!

If I've worn makeup during the day, I will use oil to clean my face that night. I only massage it for a minute or so then, and it works fine. It really does clean your face.

And that's it! I don't follow that with toner or anything.

Good luck with this, people! Please share your experiences with me and ask me any questions you may have.

It took almost 4 months to get my face into shape with this method. I almost gave up many times, but I hung on because i just KNEW it would work, based on the science. I'm SO GLAD I DID! Now I spend pennies per month on my face (whereas before I was paying over 150$ per month) and my skin looks MUCH MUCH better than it ever has. I've been using this method for more than a decade now and my skin is still completely clear.

  1. I may have to try this! Where do you get hemp oil? I just noticed that you're from Albuquerque!! I used to live there...for about 2 years. My mom was living there when I graduated from HS and I moved there to be near her. She moved back to NC about a year later and then I did as well after one more year in NM. NM is fabulous!!! I remember eating at a Maria's Tamale Hut on San Mateo (Is that right?). Oh my gosh! They had the best green chile burritos! I went to UNM for about 3 semesters. Wow, that just brings back a ton of memories! Have a wonderful Mother's Day! Big Hug!!!! ~Serene

  2. You can get the hemp oil at health food stores, herb stores, whole foods type places. It should be light green and grassy smelling.

Isn't Albuquerque awesome? I love it! I hated it at first and couldn't believe it when people told me I'd never be able to leave. They may have been right after all! Happy Mother's day to you, too, dearie!

  3. Hi there :) Thanks for the great post! You said you wash with the hemp oil once or twice a week...what do you do on the days in between?

I've been doing the OCM for several months now with Castor Oil and Sweet Almond oil and at first my pores seemed to shrink, but now it seems like they are getting clogged again. Reading what you said about oleic acid, I'm pretty darn sure that's what my problem is! Maybe the hemp oil is just what I need...

Also, one more question--do you think it matters whether you use the washcloth to steam or actually put your face over a hot sink and get steam that way?

I don't steam my face over the sink because it breaks my capillaries. I have really sensitive skin. I use the washcloth for that. When I don,t use com I just use plain water on the washcloth with sa toner and a drop of hemp. Hope this helps! Good luck. Let me know how it works.

  5. I have seborrheic dermatitis on the sides of my face and was told to make sure it wasnt high in oleic content or it will aggrevate it. I also have tons of clogs in my chin. I can get them out with extraction but they continually come back. Ive tried applying hemp oil after they come out as a way to trick my skin into thinking theres moisture there so please dont produce more oil but it never works. It just keeps clogging again and again. Do your clogs disolve by themselves or do once they work themselves out do they stay out?

  6. I dissolve my clogs with salicylic acid (toner and masque). Click on the "clearing clogged pores" tab at the top of the page for recipes. I use hemp oil to increase the amount of linoleic acid in my sebum. What's happened to you (and me) is that your sebum is low in linoleic acid and high in oleic acid. Oleic acid is thicker and clogs more easily. Using straight hemp oil over the period of a few months will fix this problem and prevent clogs from forming. It took four months for this to work for me. Now I'm clear for the first time in 27 years. Seriously. Be patient and I promise you it will work! Please keep me posted on how you're doing.

  7. Hi great post.

I'm having nice success with hemp oil as both my skin healer, and tried OCM for the first time last night with hemp alone and really liked it.

I have bad sem derm, rosacea, and have had cystic acne since high school and I'm 46 now.

I've never been able to use cleansers or anything else on my face until now with these types of results.

I was amazed last night after doing the OCM that I didn't have a thick layer of dead skin still clinging to much of my face, in particular the forehead, temples, around the nose, cheeks, and chin. It was a feeling of utter relief and happiness. I even slept great without itching. Also this morning, I awoke to soft clean skin without flaking and rashes with clogged pores and most likely some pimples somewhere.

Usually I last only a week with good results with a new regime, but I'm confident this will last because it makes great sense and science backs it up.

I read a recent study where a group with seb derm used an oil high in essential fatty acids, linoleic acid, on their face and their symptoms improved tremendously. The results supported the theory that essential fatty acid deficiency due to our processed foods Western diet is a major cause of these chronic skin disorders.

Hemp oil is the best oil for our bodies due to the omega 6 to 3 ratio of 3:1 just like out bodies. I am now supplementing with hemp internally 2 tbspns daily and externally of course. Flaxseed on the contrary is the wrong balance of 4:1 Omega 3 to 6 and can only be used for a short period of time because it throws our bodies out of balance.

I also purchased a Vitamix blender and am blending lots of raw veggies and fruits daily.

I think the 3 of these elements combined will cure my SD, Rosacea, and Acne. I'm already seeing great results

I'll try to post my progress with OCM and hemp.

    Blessings,
    Paul

  8. Hello :) Thank you so much for writing this blog, I was LOST before I found it. Do you know of anyone who has had success with getting rid of their clogged pores by only using hemp oil? I have very sensitive skin and any kind of acidic toner makes my face really itchy and dry so I am really hesitant to try salisylic acid. I also have had a period of perioral dermatitis so my skin is quite thin around the mouth and nose. Right now my skin is a bumpy nightmare, not big infected pimples but it is simply covered with clogged comedones and has been for many years and I am sick of it! My right cheek is especially bad for some reason. Hemp oil is on it`s way in the mail and I can`t wait to try it. I first tried with coconut oil which was a disaster! Those tiny bumps, hello! huge painful pimples :( So now I only wash with water and use witch hazel. Do you have any experience with this? My skin gets a little irritated and dry right after I put it on but then it calms down quickly, can this work as a toner instead of salicylic acid? Hope to get an answer from you and I will let you know how it goes with the hemp oil! Thank you, hugs from Norway :)

    1. Kamilla Sue: Thank you for posting. If you feel that the salicylic acid is not for you, then don't try it. The salicylic acid is for dissolving clogs that are already there. The hemp oil also can remove clogs. It doesn't dissolve them like the SA, I don't think, but if you do an OCM cleansing, it will remove them physically. You'll feel them as little grains under your fingertips. The greatest thing about the hemp oil is that it prevents them from forming in the first place by raising the linoleic acid content in your sebum. You should also take some internally (1 tsp a day, is what I'm told). That should help also.

SO the bottom line is that while it may take longer for it to work, I would think (based on my research and experience) that the hemp oil by itself should work fine. It may take a bit longer without the SA, but that's okay. Because once you get there, you'll stay there. Girl, I had exactly the same problem as you. My face was so covered in bumps, too. It's awful! It's the hardest kind of acne to treat, they say, and I believe it. I lived it!

As for witch hazel, it never worked for me, so I can't really speak about it. I think you should do water only cleansing with a nice nubbly washcloth to exfoliate each morning and evening, followed by a few drops of hemp oil as a moisturizer. Maybe once a week do a full-on hemp oil cleansing. It's best to do the OCM in the shower because the warm steam will open your pores.

And Yes! NO COCONUT OIL! O my god, I had some horrific experiences with that, same as you.

PLEASE let us know how you get on, Kamilla Sue. Good luck to you. I'm with you all the way.

    2. I think I want to say something about the witch hazel after all. I've thought about it a little, and I think you actually do need to use toner between the water wash and the hemp oil. After I use my toner I look at the cotton ball I've used and am always surprised at the extra grime that comes off my ostensibly clean face. So perhaps you should stick with the witch hazel as a toner. I know it's very gentle, and it's natural. I can't find any information on its comedogenicity, unfortunately. I'd say, if after 4 months (that's how long it took my skin to clear on the hemp/SA program) you're still not clear, maybe re-think the toner. That would be the only ingredient that could conceivably be causing or exacerbating the clogs at that point. We would know that it's not the hemp oil or the water!

    3. I read that willow bark is a natural source of salicylic acid that helps enhance cell turnover by exfoliating the skin. Willow bark gently dissolves dirt and impurities that may clog pores. Have you tried this? :-)

      Delete
    4. Hi Kamilla Sue! Yes, I would definitely give the willow bark a try. I've never used it myself, but after doing some research just now, I definitely would use it without any fear. Makingcosmetics.com has white willow extract in glycerin for a very reasonable price. Or you could pour boiling distilled water over some white willow bark (Salix alba). Steep it for an hour or so to make a strong willow "tea." To make a strong tea, use 2 cups of water and 3/4 cup or 1 cup of bark. Just use the tea as your toner. Keep it in the fridge.

The problem with using the bark is that you don't know how strong your concoction will be, as the salicin levels will be different for each batch. Honestly, I don't see that as being a real problem, though. If anything, it would probably be fairly weak, which is good.

Let me know if you try this. I'm curious. I might even try it myself!

      Delete
    5. I'd also like to add: I know Kamilla Sue doesn't use salicylic acid products on her face, which is why I recommend the willow bark. Don't use willow bark in conjunction with any acids already in your regimen. It can make your face photosensitive (highly reactive to sunlight) or cause other irritations.

    6. Thank you for the great advice. I might try a toner from Etsy called Organic Balancing Clarifying Toner with Neroli, Willow Bark, Calendula, B3 and Burdock. These seems like ok calming and decongesting ingredients but shout out if you see something funky! Ok, so the weirdest thing happened. I got the 100% cold pressed hemp oil from etsy (the one you have a picture of). But before I got this I tried this nutritional oil I bought I while back, it is called Okinawa cannabis oil. It contains 85,5% hemp seed oil, 10% red palm oil and 4,5% wheat germ oil. I googled the palm oil and wheat germ oil and I think the wheat germ oil is the only oil that can be a little comodogenic. But since there was so little of it I thought I should give it a go. I did the OCM for about 15 minutes on my face with it and it felt great but I noticed a slight tingling sensation, but like I said my skin is very sensitive so this is normal when trying something new. I then steemed my face with a warm washcloth and wiped off the oil with circular motion. Then I put on the witch hazel and another thin layer of the hemp oil. My face was a little red at first wich is normal for me because of the friction from the cloth but it quickly calmed down. The next morning my face felt amazing, so babysoft and a lot less dry and red! I repeated this for three nights until I got the hemp oil from etsy and started using this instead. And of course I thought I would get even better results since this was pure hemp oil. But OMG, my skin broke out so bad! It was itching and just terrible, I wanted to cry so I went back to the other oil and it calmed down again, over night! Is it possible that the pure hemp oil is too strong for my skin? Or that the tingling sensation was a sign that I might be a little allergic to the oil? Anyways I am sticking to the Okinawa for now. There is nothing normal about my skin so anyone else who reads this please don`t hesitate to try hemp oil but if you experience a similar reaction do try the Okinawa oil, it is amazing. Here`s a link to the oil: http://www.noble-house.tk/html/engels/Gamma_brochure_2012-2013/Okinawa_Omega_Cannabis_Sativa_oil_for_omega_balance.html

    7. Hey Kamilla Sue! I don't think the hemp oil would be too strong for anyone's skin, but you are the best and only judge of that. It takes the skin a few days and even weeks to respond to anything, so I wouldn't think that the hemp oil was the cause of your breakout. By breakout, do you mean irritation? Or an actual breakout of more clogs and cysts?

      The toner sounds nice.

I do have to say, though, that it seems like you're using things with a lot of ingredients in them. The ingredients don't sound that bad, but in my experience, it's better to pare it down to just one or two things you know won't cause any trouble and then add if you feel it's necessary. Right now I'm using only salicylic acid and hemp oil. If you're using something with a lot of ingredients, you won't know which is causing problems if any occur.

That said, please let me know how the stuff works out for you in the long run.

    8. I think a little bit of both. I got a lot of red bumps and it was itching a lot and it got a bit flaky a couple of days later. I got the reaction right after I used the 100% hemp oil so I can`t imagine it was anything else which makes me really sad cuz I really love how it feels on the skin. It might have been too much exfoliation maybe from the cloth? But my skin is supersensitive and usually reacts to anything I put on it so I guess I should be careful to begin with and then start to use it more frequently after a while. But I do get a little red and itchy right after I put it one so I might be allergic. Maybe I should try sunflower oil and see if I react the same way? Is it possible to be sensitive to oils in general? I am so lost.

    2. Hi Deborah! Yeah, that coconut oil can do horrible things to your skin, for sure, if you're prone to clogged pores. Try the hemp. It's the best thing that's ever happened to my skin. I've tried EVERY SINGLE THING out there, I think, over the course of the past 27 years, and hemp oil is the only thing that worked. Well, I shouldn't say that, I guess. Retin-A worked, and some very expensive freckle fading cream (weirdly) worked to unclog my pores, but I didn't want to spend all that money and put a bunch of chemicals on my face. Please let us know how you do with the hemp!

  11. Hey again! I hope you are able to respond to this post as soon as possible cause my skin is really getting worse by the minute :-( Is the skin supposed to get really rough and scaly after a while of using the oil? The result the first couple of days was soft and lovely but now my entire face is flaking! And I get red itchy blotches on random places of my body where I have put the oil. Is there any other oil that gives even more moisture and does not clog the pores I can try instead, cause it does not look like my skin is liking the hemp at all unfortunately. Hugs from Sue

  12. Hey Sue! I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble. Boo!!!

From your previous posts, I assume you're using a few products on your skin that I (personally) am not 100 % sure on. If it was me, I would strip down to ONLY the oil and the salicylic acid toner. No extra ingredients. Because, really, you don't know what's causing the reaction unless you're only using one or two ingredients, right?

First of all, it sounds like you're allergic to something. Whatever causes a red reaction, even if only for a moment, STOP using! You can switch to sunflower oil if the hemp oil is hurting you. Sunflower is the only other oil with a comparable linoleic acid content.

Also, it takes time to start working. For me it took four months. I almost quit so many times because I didn't see any improvement for so long. But I forced myself to stick to it. And it eventually worked and still is working for me. That said, it is NOT okay for you to be having such horrible problems. If anything, your condition should appear to be the same... not worse. So stop what you're doing.

To sum up: here's my advice:

Don't use any soap. Use the water only method morning and evening most days and the oil-cleansing method for a minute or two in the evening only when you've worn makeup that day.

Do a deep oil cleansing once a month.

Switch to sunflower oil and use only pure, organic, cold-pressed sunflower oil as a cleanser and moisturizer.

Make a weak SA toner and use only that. I say this not because I don't believe in witch hazel or anything else, but because I KNOW that the SA toner works.

Please let me know if this helps. I feel for you, Sue! I'm worried!

  13. Thank you so much! But that`s the thing I have only been using water and hemp for some time now without improvement regarding irritation. But I am starting to think it might be something in the tapwater that I am allergic to so I will try to wash my face with distilled water from the pharmacy and see if it gets better. I also have to confess that I got a little eager and did the deep oil cleansing method quite frequently in the beginning in addition to cleanse my skin with the oil for about a minute each night. So maybe I have tricked my skin into thinking it does not need to produce sebum and therefore becoming dry and irritated? As to the salisylic acid, I am a little hesitant to mix my own but I guess I will just have to try. And also I have been researching a lot on linoleic acid. Is the key to have as high linoleic acid content as possible or is hemp the perfect balance? I was wondering about maybe trying safflower oil since this has an even higher level of linoleic acid and rearly causes an allergic reaction, but then again neither does hemp so I don`t know. Hope to hear your thoughts! And thank you so much for caring so deeply, not many people do these days <3

    1. Hello, Kamilla Sue! Yeah, it's better to not do the deep OCM cleansing as often. I do it maybe once a month. The balance of linoleic acid isn't what you're looking for, it's content. Hemp oil, from my understanding has the highest level, but sunflower and safflower are good, too. I think the content changes with batch, too. I'd say find the one that doesn't cause any redness on your skin and just go with it. ALways remember (and I know I've said it a million times) it takes a long time for the change to happen.

Good luck and keep us posted!

  14. I am wondering how you work out storing your oil? You mentioned keeping it in the freezer, so do you tote your bottle to the bathroom from the freezer each time? Are you washing your face in the kitchen near the freezer? Is it ok to put the bottle on the shelf in the warm shower while you wash and return it to the freezer after you've finished?

I've always thought it odd that so many beauty products benefit from being kept chilled but we store them in the warmest room of the house! One day when I'm rich ;) I'll install a mini-fridge as a medicine cabinet in my master suite.

    1. Ah, Bev! The mini-fridge in the bathroom dream... we all have it.

I store the large container of oil in the freezer. I fill a small bottle from that and keep the small bottle in the bathroom... it's fine for a week or so. And yes, I bring the container in the shower with me if I'm doing a deep oil cleanse.

  16. Thank you so very much for posting this OCM method! After just one use, my pores seemed to have shrunk dramatically, especially in my T-zone area. I also felt those little sebum plugs on my fingertips about 1 minute into the cleanse; it was amazing! The retail price for a bottle of hemp oil at Whole Foods was $8.99 (vs the $65 I spent only a couple weeks ago on new facewash and didn't see half the results I'd seen tonight). So again, thank you thank you! I have one question for you -- I have a Clarisonic face brush and was wondering if that can be used in place of a towel for the water only cleanse?

    1. Hi Yvonne! Thank you so much for posting here. The face brush would be great for water only cleansing. As long as you use something slightly exfoliating (the brush, a nubby washcloth, a sponge, etc.) it will work. I'd be careful about overexfoliating, but other than that I think it will be great! Let us know how it works for you.

I'm so with you on the "happy I don't have to spend millions of dollars on face products that don't work" issue. I feel liberated, honestly.

  17. Hi Miri,

I live in Toronto, Canada. As you probably already know the winters down here are brutal. For the past 3-4 years my skin has become too dry in the winter. It peels. I stopped using Retin-A because I know it is what's made my skin so dry and sensitive. My dermatologist went onto to diagnose me with perioral dermatitis. He gave me a heavy cream based moisturizer by the name of Glaxal base with 4% clindamycin, which was working for about 3 yrs. As of last year, I noticed it was clogging my pores, especially in summer so I quit that moisturizer. I can see it was too heavy for summer, but I don't understand why it suddenly decided to clog my pores in winter. Anyway, I use rose water in the summer as a moisturizer, which works like a charm :) As for winter, I kept looking for something that wouldn't clog my pores. Everything was clogging my pores, from cetaphil moisturizer to almond oil. Anyway I came across your post and decided to get organic hemp seed oil. I have been using a drop or 2 as a moisturizer night and day for 2 weeks now. First 2-3 days were good, but I started breaking out around my chin 4 days ago. Chin also happens to be my problem area and it doesn't help but I'm on my period right now as well. Your blog gives me hope. I hope this is just a purging phase and it gets better soon. You said it took 4 months for your skin to adjust. Can you please tell me what happened in your experience during the time when your skin was trying to adjust to hemp seed oil? Did you have a break out period? How bad?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Hi Alef! I'm so glad you wrote. My skin remained almost exactly the same through the transition period. I just kept getting the same numbers of clogs. But I didn't give up. I'm tenacious, I guess! And then toward the end of the 4th month, I started noticing fewer clogs, until they just all went away. I didn't have a breakout period, but I'm not surprised that you are. The sebum that has been produced by your skin is still rising to the surface, and that is the sebum that has an overabundance of oleic acid and not enough linoleic acid. So be patient.

Perioral dermatitis seems to be a catch-all phrase relating to any skin issues that happen to occur around the mouth. Do you have actual pimples? Clogs? Bumps? Is your skin oily, normal, or dry?

The Glaxal Base is a moiturizer base with the following ingredients: Water, Petrolatum, Cetearyl Alcohol, Paraffinum Liquidum, Cereareth-20, Sodium Phosphate, p-chloro-m-cresol. Just at first glance, the petrolatum and paraffinum liquidum (basically liquid wax) can clog pores. I would stop using that immediately and go to just the hemp oil.

Clindamycin is an antibiotic used to treat anaerobic bacteria. Unless you have full-on acne, with pimples, this most likely will not help.

Please write back! I'm interested in how your skin progresses.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Thank you for your feedback, Miri! I'm very impressed with the way you responded to my post. You did your research on clindamycin and Glaxal base :) I'm glad you did that. It explains why Glaxal base started clogging me and the clindamycin was mixed in with the moisturizer. I stopped using that 2 yrs ago, and have been looking for a proper moisturizer since then. It's been 2 weeks and 3 days since I started hemp oil as a moisturizer. The skin from my cheeks looks great, which has never been a problem area to begin with. The reason I was diagnosed with perioral dermatitis was because the skin around my mouth and chin became very dry to the point it was feeling. I know that was Retin a's doing. I have been using Retin a during bedtime for the last 4-5 years, and the effects of Retin a were phenomenal for me, but 2 yrs ago, I noticed that Retin a wasn't doing anything for my chin, in fact it was drying it out even more. My derm told me only use Retin a on my forehead and temples, and went onto switch me from dormer 211 lotion w/clindamycin to Glaxal base w/ clindamycin. I tell ya, these topical drugs are good for a short time, but later on you see the havoc they wreak on your skin. I quit Retin a cold turkey 3 months ago, which is probably why my forehead is breaking out now with hemp oil.

To give you an overall picture. My problem area is my t zone. I used to get a breakout around period time on the right side of my chin, which needless to say was hormonal. I research and discovered that milk injected with hormones of it's own plays with our hormones even more. So I quit drinking milk and started taking omegas 3,6,9 to balance my hormones. Worked wonders!!! I don't have hormonal breakouts on the right side of my chin. However, I do feel like my skin is purging because I'm not getting abnormal or painful cystic pimples. I feel like hemp is correcting the damage Retin a did on my chin by excessively drying out sebum production in that corner. As for the forehead, it is normalizing th le sebum production on forehead as well. After all, these drugs are chemicals and they got to have some side effect, which I'm seeing now.

    1. Alef, my pleasure!

I used Retin-A for years, too, and it did work great. I just began to get uncomfortable with how harsh it was and started looking for the REAL, underlying issues that maybe could be treated naturally. That led me on a years-long quest that finally ended well! HEMP OIL is the key! And yes, you're probably right about the hemp correcting the drying damage done by the Retin-A. I hadn't thought of that.

Please keep us posted on your progress!

    2. Wanted to add: It's good you're taking the omegas. This helps normalize the sebum as well.

  20. I hope hemp oil is my final destination. I just want to find an organic source of comfort for my skin and leave it alone. Chemicals are no good in the long run. My skin becoming excessively dry is a result of Retin a and clindamycin usage in the past. It's like what my mom says, "anything unnatural has a price in the long run". Fair enough. Organic is the best way to go!! Thanks again, Miri. Having you around helps with the purging period. I'll come back and update you as I reach my 3rd week. :)

  21. I came across your website last night and I am so glad I did. I had some cold pressed hemp oil, which I love on salads, in the refrigerator and I got some out and did a whole facial massage. I was shocked at the fact that I could literally feel the comedones coming out of my skin. I washed my face and hands with a light organic face wash before I started, to make sure that I was starting on a fresh clean slate. I couldn't believe it. Now that it has sunken in, I'm still shocked, but I can move past it. My skin looks beautiful today, BUT it feels a little rough. I'm wondering if there is a period of "it gets worse, before it gets better"? Also, can I do the 10m massage/cleanse to much? Is it not a good idea to do it nightly? Also one last question, have you ever heard of tamanu oil? And if you know what the comedongenic rating of it is? Or could you maybe point me in the right direction to find out. I have heard that tamanu is good for scarring, and while I want to use hemp for the long run, I'm wondering if I would be ok to use tamanu to help heal the scarring. Thanks!!

    1. Hi Katelyn! Isn't it awesome!!!??? Yay for hemp.

I do the 10m massage maybe once a month. You could probably do it once a week, but not more than that. You can clean your face with oil every night, but not for more than a minute or two. Otherwise, it's just too much. Too clean! Your skin will take some time to adjust, but it won't get "bad" in the sense of a breakout or anything. It may seem a bit dryer at first. It took four months for my skin to completely heal, and it's been fine ever since with this simple routine.

Tamanu oil! The oil is high in linoleic, oleic, and stearic fatty acids. It's got a 2 on the comedogenicity chart. That means there's a very good chance that it will cause or exacerbate clogged pores. I wouldn't use it, with my problem. Perhaps applying it ONLY to the scars would be okay. The high fa content makes it a perfect choice for that!

    2. Thank you for that! I was planing to purchase it, but I may just start using fresh aloe vera for my scars. The aloe helps to reduce the scarring, but it makes my face much to dry to use in this winter weather : ). And really, I do love hemp, hemp every and anything! Hemp could save the world in my opinion. Thank you again for your site. I will be a regular visitor.

  22. I just came across this great site. I was just wondering if hemp oil can be used as a nightly moisturizer? Or how would a rookie go about attempting to try this? Thanks!

    1. Hi Peter! Thanks so much for visiting! Yes, hemp oil can be used as a nightly moisturizer. That's exactly what I do every single night and morning. It's beautiful. All you do is cleanse your face as normal, tone as you like (or don't) and spread a drop or two of organic hemp oil all over your clean face. That's it! Couldn't be easier! Remember to keep your hemp oil in the freezer, as otherwise it will go rancid fairly quickly. I've kept hemp oil for months and months and months in the freezer and it's fine. Good luck and keep us posted!

    3. Hi again! You can get hemp oil at any health food store. I buy mine online from makingcosmetics.com by the gallon and keep it in the freezer. Try to get organic, cold-pressed hemp oil. It should be dark green and smell herbalicious.

  23. Do you have a clear cut recipe for a salicylic acid dissolved in hemp oil recipe for cleansing/unclogging pores? Thanks in advanced!

    1. Hi Ed! You want a 3 - 4 % solution. To make 2 ounces, you'll need 11.5 teaspoons of hemp oil and a little less than 1/2 teaspoon of SA. This will give you a 3.5 % solution. You could probably go to 1/2 teaspoon of SA for a 4% solution (approximately). Good luck and keep us posted!

    2. Going to make this tonight! I've experimented with alcohol solutions and was getting great results, but I'd really like to try the hemp oil version, I feel as if this may be the best solution for me. How would you recommend I use the hemp and SA mixture? Similar to your OCM?

BTW, great job on this blog! The content is of high caliber and informative. I'm sure I'm not the only one that appreciates the time and effort you put in. Thanks again!

      Delete
    3. He Ed! Yeah, just use it as you would the plain hemp oil for OCM and as a moisturizer in the am and pm. If you feel it will work, then it will work!

Thanks for your kind words about my blog. I LOVE writing and researching it, and I'm really happy that people are finding some of the things they need here. YAY!

    4. Finished making the solution but before using it I was curious whether I needed to add a pH elevator? I don't think there is a need but I wanted to get your thoughts on it.

    5. Hey Ed! As far as I know, there is no pH for an oil. I'd just add the SA and go for it!

    6. this is exactly what i have been doing... i added salicyclic acid to my ocm with abit of polysorbate 80. at the end of the ocm i added water to massage my face to form a milk emulsion, i then tested this milk with a ph paper, it says ph 3 to ph 4.... this is the stage where the salicyclic acid gets activated...

    7. Ron, this sounds very interesting! Polysorbate 80 has a comedogenic rating of 0, so absolutely no worries there. Great way to do this, I think...

  24. Hello great post! I just have a few questions.. so you oil cleanse a few times a week, but use hemp oil as moisturizer in am and pm? And when do you use the SA toner ? One more question..what is your toner made of? Thank you so much again for this post!!!!

    1. Hi Nicole! Thank you so much for visiting! I use hemp oil as a moisturizer in the am and pm, yes, in addition to an OCM once a week or so. I use the SA toner in the am and pm, too:

      cleanse (water only, usually)
      toner
3-4 drops of hemp oil (as moisturizer).

The toner is water, SA, and a pH balancer. Here's a link to the recipe: http://practicalbohemianbeauty.blogspot.com/2012/05/clearing-clogged-pores-salicylic-acid.html

Good luck, and let us know how it goes for you!

  25. Hi Miri,
What can I say? Hemp oil works beautifully for me! Never really had problem skin but never had flawless skin either and always admired women with natural glowing skin.
I never saw the point in spending lots on cosmetics because what you buy are mostly chemicals. Just didnt make sense to me.

People may call me a pig as i never cleansed my face daily (I know I should) and I also admit this bluntly. Also, as with the rest of my body - i DO shower (not that much if a pig haha) but always used a tiny bit of shower gel if any and refused to put any mineral oil based products on my body after a shower. Whats more - i do not use deodorant either and cant say I stink.(that also depends on your diet... )
Anyways, two years back ( I am 38 and was /am a prof sports women) i started using cosmetics regularly for the very first time. Dr.Hauschka is as far as I got - i could and can easily justify their ingredients plus my skin responds very well to it.

Some weeks back i thought, i wonder if people ever put flax or hemp oil in their faces, knowing that these oils are superiour and part of my diet. Then i was sure one cant put oils in ones face, that was my assumption and exactely of what you described in your very first post. Anyways, somehow I got back to that question and googled it, only to find your blog and some others. Also read up on flax and other oils and just took the plunge and put my hemp oil in my face.
I am quite astonished! Am using it now for a week as a moisturizer and i LOVE loooking at my skin. As I mentioned, i never really had problematic skin, just a few pimples every now and then, some red patches but all in all very minor.
I also did the oil cleanse for face and chest and it works fantastically.
So I basically want to tell you that it works for me and i feel like I have to tell anyone to not throw out so much money for cosmetics that may or may not work.
My skin looks radiant, even, wrinkles seem to get smaller and finer and the feeling is just superiour. I even put it on the lips :)

I have one question for you though: i am sorted 100%now in terms of a moisturizer but i am still looking for a sun screen that my skin likes and that doesnt cost the world.
Have you explored yet making a sun screen with hemp oil and zinc powder for example?

    LOVE your posts!
    Many regards from Cape Town

  26. Just wanted to say I LOVE your blog, I think I've read just about every post at this point. I tried the ocm in the past and while parts of my skin looked radiant, I broke out in horrible cysts. I mistakenly assumed that this was just purging, but now I've read a few comments that say that cysts are a reaction that tells you something is NOT working with your regime. Makes sense, since I was using a combo of castor, jojoba, & vitamin E. My skin is oily, but also has a lot of "congestion" right now (I'm thinking I have the high oleic-type oil problem), so I'm really hoping the hemp oil route works for me. I mixed some up last night with a few drops each of tea tree, lavender, rosemary, thyme, & clary sage (I know, a lot of different things, but I've used them in a toner for a while now and they haven't seemed to make my skin any worse). My skin looked much more plump and happy today, despite still being congested. I realize it'll take a little time...A few questions for you Miri:
    (1) Do you use a salicylic toner after you do your weekly deep oc? Do you worry that it's messing up the effects of the oil? (forgive me, total newb to making my own products and using all natural ingredients, but I'm really interested in learning).
    (2) Do you know of any esthetician programs that focus on natural vs. chemical ingredients?
Thanks so much for all your help!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Hi Jennifer! Thank you so much for your kind words. I love writing this blog. I understand how absolutely frustrating it can be to have skin problems, believe me. To answer your questions:

    1. When I do the weekly OC, I do not use toner afterwards. I feel like it would mess up the effects of the oil! '

    2. Do you mean programs where you become an esthetician? No, I don't know of any. Are you considering becoming a natural esthetician? I think that would be AWESOME!

Please keep us posted as to your progress with your skin. I'm very interested to know how it works for you!

  28. Thanks for your reply! Ok, I think I've got a hang of the routine, we'll see how it goes :) Yes, I was just wondering if you knew of any programs to become an esthetician that have a more natural bent to them. You seem like you know quite a lot about skincare! I don't personally know any estheticians, so just curious if there's anything like that out there. I think there's definitely a market for it. I'm considering starting an herbalist course soon and then maybe making a foray into skin care, we shall see! Thanks so much for all your great info!

Thanks a lot for your reply!!
So i ordered the "zinc oxide emulsion LAW" from the pharmacy (no oils or fats in that one) and mixed it with the hemp. Works like a charm!! Since zinc oxide ALWAYS leaves a lil white shimmer, i found its neutralized by the slight dark green tone of the hemp oil. Skin looks fantastic, mixes well - can only recommend it! Plus it obviously keeps the UV at bay :)

  31. Thank you for this! I was very excited when I learned about the OCM. I started out about 2 months ago using a mixture of castor oil and olive oil because those were the oils recommended in nearly every article I found about OCM. After about 6 weeks I broke out in horrible cystic acne on my cheeks and chin. I have always had decent skin that was prone to acne but never anything like this! I started doing more research and found your article. I went out and bought hemp seed oil that same day. I cleanse with it, follow with rosewater toner and then moisturize with the hemp oil. Two weeks later my skin is nearly completely healed! Thank you thank you thank you!

  32. Hi Miri ~ Greetings from Durban South Africa
Wow!!! Thank you for sharing, You are a geat blogger, i think I too have read every blog up to this point, incerdibly informative.

I had a similar experience to aliB. Tried the OCM a few days ago, using castor oil and olive oil.3 days later I broke out even more around my chin area, which has always been my problem, I am so upset as now I have to cover up with foundation for a function this weekend...Sigh!

My routine consists of cleansing with cetaphil, using Hyseke solaire 50 spf afterward, which says 'oil free' on the tube, recommended by my dermatologist, tea tree oil to dab on zits that pop up and that's it.
I have used jojoba oil now and again as I am prone to eczema on my face:( What is the jojoba oil rating, is it an oil or a wax?

I would LOVE to try the hemp, but am so despondent after the OCM result, also what toner / mosturiser do i use for my skin condition with the congestion concentrated mainly on my chin area?

Been hearing a lot about PCOS and acne, if this is my problem ( don't know yet ) will topical treatments still work?

Looking forward to your advice ~ Thank you

    1. Hi Ruwaida! Thank you so much for visiting. I'm not surprised about your breakout after the OCM. Castor, olive, and jojoba are all high in oleic acid, which encourages clogs. Oleic acid makes your sebum dry and thick, which causes it to clog the pore. Switch to hemp, which is the highest in linoleic acid. That's what your sebum is lacking. Don't be afraid!!!

I've seen jojoba referred to as both a wax and an oil, so I'm not sure what the official classification is. I just know I never use it b/c of its high oleic acid content...

Your routine sounds all right to me, but I would definitely include hemp oil and salicylic acid toner into the mix. Hemp will actually improve the linoleic acid content in your sebum and solve the problem once and for all. You can use that as a moisturizer. It cured my acne!

As for the PCOS, I don't know anything about it. So sorry.

      Please keep us posted!

  33. Hi Miri! Is there a difference between hemp oil and hemp seed oil? I just ran out and got some organic hemp oil but I'm seeing the bottle on your site labeled "hemp seed"
I too had clear skin my whole life only to be burdened with these stubborn clogs at 21 years old! I suspect it's from always washing with a harsh scrubby cleanser everyday and never moisturizing my forehead or nose because I always feared breakouts there. And what do you know, those are the only two places congested!

  35. Thanks so much! I was also wondering if the oil will bring up old clogs. I used some last night and have a few more today. For the past month I've been trying to reverse the damage I think I've done to my barrier by using drying products to get rid of the clogs. Nothing ever worked. So I've just been using a mild cream cleanser, exfoliating twice a week with a dermaroller, and moisturizing with an oil free moisturizer but I'm still getting clogs. Does it take a long time for the skin to balance back out and for pores to function properly again?

    1. Hi Alessandra! It took me about 4 months for my skin to clear up. I didn't use anything at all except what I've included in my starter kit (Thank you so much, btw!). I was afraid to put anything on my skin unless I knew exactly what it would do. I was so freakin SICK of the stupid clogs!

To answer your question, I never believed in the purging theory where a new regimen will bring out old clogs if it's working properly. I may be wrong. I've never done any research on that aspect of things. To me, a thing will either clog you up or not. That being said, it does take a while for your sebum to normalize, so you will continue to get clogs for awhile. It took me months.

Good luck, Alessandra. Please keep us updated on your progress!

  36. Hi Miri

Thank you so much for the reply to my first post.
I began with the hemp oil treatment a day after writing to you. I haven't had a fantastic result but am going to persevere, thanks to your encouragement. This has been my experience so far:

Once again a few days after I began the hemp oil cleansing I had another breakout, but this time on my cheeks, an area that hadn't had breakouts before. My self esteem took another huge nosedive. I'm assuming i'ts my skin 'purging' I was only able to make up the SA toner 2 days ago as the ingredient Triethlanomine, was so difficult to locate here in South Africa. It makes my skin tingly and itchy in a few places but settles after a few minutes, is this okay? My skin is a bit on the sensitive side so should I be concerned?

The breakouts leave marks on my skin even though I am so careful not to interfere with them, and as I am fair it looks awful. Is there anything safe and natural that you would suggest for the scarring?

I just want to make sure that my new routine with the hemp oil is correct, please advise
    1) I cleanse in the morning 1 - 2 min with oil, tone and moisturizer with a drop of oil mixed into my sunblock
    2) Evening, I cleanse again with oil 1- 2 min, tone and apply tea tree where necessary, apply a few drops of oil to moisturise, no sunblock.
    3) I use a silky, soft, Sensai chamois cloth to wipe off the oil, should I be using one that's a bit more knobby?
    4) Should I be using the oil am and pm to cleanse, even though it's just for a short time?

I did the deep cleanse on the first day and again today, which is about a week since I began. My skin feels amazing, even though it doesn't look great yet.! I am really looking forward to better days and hope that my patience is rewarded with the results that you have achieved. Thank you again for the time that you take in responding so graciously to all who write to you.

    1. Hi Ruwaida! I'm glad you're starting to see some effect.

I'm going to try to answer all your questions! First, I don't believe the skin purges. I have no direct evidence, just a feeling based on my own experience. The SA toner will help a lot with dissolving those clogs (over time, of course!). It will sting a bit, but if it's really irritating, use a bit less SA and alcohol in the recipe.

For scarring, I suggest lavender essential oil. You can add it to your toner or your hemp oil. Just a drop for your whole face.

      1) I cleanse in the morning 1 - 2 min with oil, tone and moisturizer with a drop of oil mixed into my sunblock

I would limit oil cleansing to once or twice a week only. I only do the short oil cleansing when I wear makeup, which is about once a week. On the other days I only do the water only method.

      2) Evening, I cleanse again with oil 1- 2 min, tone and apply tea tree where necessary, apply a few drops of oil to moisturise, no sunblock.

Sounds great, if you're removing makeup. If not, I'd stick to the water only method.

      3) I use a silky, soft, Sensai chamois cloth to wipe off the oil, should I be using one that's a bit more knobby?

A bit knobby is good! You need to make sure you're getting all that oil off.

      4) Should I be using the oil am and pm to cleanse, even though it's just for a short time?

I don't think so (see above). I would not do the short-duration oil cleanse more than once or twice a week.

I'm so happy you're skin is starting to feel great. It's my absolute pleasure to share this solution with everyone. I know how awful it is to be plagued with acne... Let us know how this works out for you!

  37. Hi Miri

Great! Thank you for answering all my questions, I will certainly heed your advice. I do think the SA was too strong for me, my skin is drier in some areas and I developed a ' burn mark ' on the chin area that is slowly peeling off, oh dear! Should I try mixing my SA with the hemp or go with the weaker SA toner? I read recently that the alcohol may not allow collagen to regenerate in the skin, your take on this?

Is it okay to carry on with my cetaphil cleanser daily?

I will definitly try the lavender, i assume it won't clog my pores?
Your blog is certainly an inspiration, I refer to it regularly when my skin takes a battering,

    God Bless you Miri.

    1. Hey Ruwaida! One of my other readers used SA in hemp oil with great success. Put 1/2 teaspoon of SA in 2 oz of Hemp oil. This will give you a roughly 3.5 percent solution. Actually, since you seem very sensitive to it, I'd start with less, maybe 1/4 teaspoon in 2 ounces. Try it! Let us know how it works out for you!

I too am tweaking my protocol and trying to follow Beths suggestions more carefully because she has the same type of acne as me. I know I am on the right track but I was oil cleansing too much too because I thought I needed it because I can't us SA. I am just now switching to only OCM at night for makeup removal (I still have a fair amount of red spots and I like to cover with mineral makeup.) I am only now starting water cleansing in AM. I am NOT getting a lot of new whiteheads. But am getting new blackheads (small) so I am going to cut way back on the OCM. Please come back and give us an update! I will too!

  39. Hi. Is hemp seed oil effective for combination skin and mild acne? Is there an unbearing smell that stays for long?

    1. Hi ye! Hemp oil is great for any kind of skin. The smell is strong, but it does not linger. I LOVE Mignon's suggestions below. That sounds awesome...

      Delete
  40. The smell does not linger at all. And I use lavender essential oil to dab on my healing spots and that cancels out the hemp. I also spritz with a home-made toner of spring water and drops of lavender oil. The hemp smell is not bad at all.

The more I research skin stuff, the more I realize that the term "combination" skin is really just the skin reacting to poor diet, stress, facial cleansers that strip/disrupt the acid mantle, and other powerful skin care products that leave the skin fighting itself.

  41. Hey Miri!
Because of this post, I've ordered hemp oil. And I am so excited! (Also I LOVE your blog!)
I've had pretty bad acne since the age of around thirteen (SIX years! long enough if you ask me) and nothing has ever really worked. I first started with standard acne treatments from the drugstore, and then a couple of years ago I got some prescription strength stuff - clindamycin. It worked pretty well but it was always kind of a temporary solution, and clindamycin is not necessarily a super safe antibiotic.
For around a year I've been doing the OCM. I first started with olive oil, and it made my skin soft but never really helped for anything. Then I transitioned to coconut oil. It was warm and smelled good, but I realized later on it wasn't doing me any favors
After my realization, I stopped using my clindamycin and coconut oil and went back to straight olive oil. It worked well enough for the time. I still got breakouts and my skin was uneven and oily, but nothing too serious. At most, four zits on my face at any given time.
Then around two and a half months ago, I tried a sample makeup primer and it caused a horrifying reaction. Nothing could help it, and I refused to go back to the antibiotics.
So without doing TOO much research, I switched to a blend of jojoba, sweet almond, and castor.
My skin is really oily, really fair, and my breakouts are red and inflamed.
The blend of the three helped clear up a little bit of the hot, allergic reaction acne from the primer, but then I started breaking out worse than I ever have before.
I stopped blending them and tried just jojoba for about a week and a half, but it seems to be doing a lot worse. So right now I'm doing sweet almond and castor until my hemp arrives.
After doing a bit more research this time, I've decided on hemp.
I'm PRETTY SURE my problem is having too much oleic acid in my skin.

ANYWAY sorry for such a long post but I love your blog and trust your opinion on my skin's sorry state! Any thoughts on this?

    1. Hi Nicole! Sorry it took so long to get back to you. All of the oils you mentioned are highly comedogenic, meaning they cause your pores to become clogged. They are all high in oleic acid, and so are making your situation worse! Switching to hemp will be the best thing you ever do.

How is it going? Please give us an update!

  42. Hi Miri,

I have cystic acne mainly on my jaws and acne scars from years of acne.. I have started with OCM using hemp oil. Its been 5 days now, my skin fees good but I am still getting acne again on the jaw area..will these go with time.. I want to be patient with this method. I have a few questions though:

    1. Ideally how many times should I do it? currently i am doing it every night and I am not using any other products on my face.
Am thinking of getting the ACV though for toning..do i need to put a mask?

    2. Also can I apply other medications while I am on it, like retino?
    3. Also is it ok if I apply sunscreen?

I hope i get rid of these painful ugly cytic acne soon..

    1. O Alisha. Cystic acne. SO awful. I had that, too.

Okay. Don't use the hemp OCM every night. Cut it down to once every week or two weeks, and make sure you get ALL the oil off each time. Follow the instructions above for steaming/wiping it all off with a washcloth. VERY IMPORTANT!!!

You can definitely use ACV for toner.

I would cut out the medication. If you continue for a few months with this regimen, you won't need it. You just have to be patient and stick it out. Waiting sucks, I don't mind telling you. But it will work in the end.

One of my readers made her own sunscreen with zinc oxide and hemp oil. I'm going to try it and do a post about it here very soon. Stay tuned for that. She says it works great! In the meantime, I am using neutrogena sensitive skin SPF 40 sunscreen and have had no problems.

      Please keep us posted, Alisha!

  43. Hi Miri,
I'm new here, and I'm loving everything I'm reading here. Good for you. I have a questions about my daily routine for my skin..
I use Honey to wash my face morning and night followed by Rosehip seed oil and Tamanu oil. Am I washing my face too much ? I have so many blackheads on my nose and chin, I can never get rid of them. Large pores all over my face. I have an alright skin but not the best.

So now I'm gong to start with this Hemp oil. Can I buy this special toner that you're talking about? I have no idea how to make it. Also will it help minimize my pores & get rid of my black heads permanently?
I'm sure it's the same questions over and over again from what everyone is asking but i'm so desperate to have a good skin.

    Thank You
    Mary

    1. Mary, first of all, I am MORE than happy to answer everyone's questions. The only reason I even started this blog is because it took me SOOOO LONG to cure my acne that I wanted to share my discoveries with other people having the same problem. Maybe they won't have to go through what I went through!

Okay, I'm glad you're switching to hemp because rosehip seed oil and tamanu oil are highly comedogenic. This means that they cause sebum to collect in the pores and form whiteheads or blackheads.

      Honey is good.

If you like, I can make a special listing for you on my shop website for the toner. I sell kits to make the stuff, but I can definitely make it up for you if that's what you prefer. Just let me know!

  44. What happens if you use too much Hemp Oil. I think washed my face too much with it, and now I'm seeing some black bumps on my face.

I'll tone it down and use the OCM just once a month, I think I over did it. Will the bumps go away ? I'm soo scared, plz help :)

    1. Hi Mary! I understand your fear, believe me.

As I'm sure you know, those bumps are blackheads. These are little sebum plugs that get caught in the pore. They start off white, and then when exposed to the air they become discolored (black). The good news is that they are not closed... meaning they are not caught within the pore. They are close to or on the surface, therefore they are easier to get rid of.

The bumps will go away. Hemp oil cannot hurt your complexion at all.

I definitely recommend going down to once a month on the heavy (more than a couple of minutes)OCM. That's what I do. I clean my face with hemp oil about once a week (whenever I wear makeup), but only for a minute or so. One crucial thing to remember is that you need to remove all of the oil after OCM, whether it's a long or a short cleansing. Make sure you steam your face with the warm washcloth and wipe the oil off several times, until your face feels clean. I do it three or four times, just to be sure.

Also, if you can, please use salicylic acid toner. You can find the recipe on this blog. This will help get rid of the bumps quicker, as it dissolves sebum.

Please keep me posted, Mary. I'm concerned! I don't want you to fret!

Here's an update: I've been washing my face day/night with 'water only' no toner (i still have to make it) & adding 'hemp oil'.
My skin has calmed down quite a bit, still got some bumps but not as big/much,( my neck has lots of small pimples) BUT ... i think i'm going on the right path.

Now I don't' know when do deep clean again....a bit afraid I'll restart or make things worse.
I think I 'over cleaned my skin' 3 days in a row.. for too long..what else would've been ?

...I know you said many times it will take time, BUT will my blackheads on my nose, ever fully go away ? & hopefully NOT return?
Will my pores minimize (although huge improvement) but still fill up will lots of little blackheads GRRRRRR
    Wishful thinking ???
Is the toner really 'that big' of a deal to use ?
Should i always apply hemp after toning or Deep cleansing or just leave the skin as is sometimes ? ( i just don't want to 'over apply'

Last one I promise for now ;) ehehe
I have never used sunscreen. Is it a big deal to use it ? I read that 'hemp protects against the sun' ...

Thank You, Thank You :))))) I feel like I made a new best friend....Oh and don't worry, I'm not going anywhere ;)

    1. So glad to see you back here, Mary!

      1. "Now I don't' know when do deep clean again....a bit afraid I'll restart or make things worse."

I do a deep clean (OCM) once a month or so. Just wait a week or two and then do one. You won't make it worse, I promise!

      2. I think I 'over cleaned my skin' 3 days in a row.. for too long..what else would've been ?"

I'm not quite sure if you can over clean your skin, but if any of the oil is left on the skin, it has pollutants in it (whether it's soot from the air or sebum from your pores). This will naturally cause more problems. The most I do a hemp cleansing (just the short one, a minute or two) is once or twice a week, max. And if I do twice a week (if I happen to be wearing makeup that many times per week, which is rare), I'll put off the deep cleansing.

      3. "I know you said many times it will take time, BUT will my blackheads on my nose, ever fully go away ? & hopefully NOT return? Will my pores minimize (although huge improvement) but still fill up will lots of little blackheads GRRRRRR
      Wishful thinking ???"

Definitely. They definitely will get better and then disappear completely. The pores will become smaller because they will not have anything trapped inside them. There is no doubt about it.

      4. "Is the toner really 'that big' of a deal to use?"

Not really. The toner will help to dissolve the existing plugs, but won't prevent new ones. The hemp oil is the preventative. I barely ever use the toner now that my skin is clear. Sometimes when it's close to my period I'll get a couple of clogs. Then I use the toner and they're gone in a few days. Honestly, though, I would use something. ACV diluted in water is good. You could try rosewater or some other hydrosol. Just something to get the last bits of grime off the skin.

      5. "Should i always apply hemp after toning or Deep cleansing or just leave the skin as is sometimes ? ( i just don't want to 'over apply'"

After toning, I put a drop or two of hemp on my face, neck, and chest. This is the important part of the regime, in my opinion. After deep cleansing or even a short hemp cleanse to remove makeup, I just leave the skin as is. No toner, no final hemp application. Just make sure you get all that dirty oil off your face! Steam it, lady!!!

      6. "I have never used sunscreen. Is it a big deal to use it ? I read that 'hemp protects against the sun' ..."

I use sunscreen every day. I think it's important, but that's just my opinion. If you're trying to clear your face, I'd go without it for the time being, but keep your face shaded if you can. Wear a hat or stay out of the sun completely.

      YAY!

  47. I'm sorry me again, I'm being soo annoying ..but I'm asking you questions as I think of them.
Speaking of using sun screen, I have brown spots around my eyes (well one eye mainly).

You think that's from the sun ? & if I start using sun screen now will they go away or minimize ? Will they get worse with age ? I want to kick my self now! & I'm only 30 !!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You are far from annoying, Mary!!!

Those spots are most likely from the sun. You're too young to be getting age spots! If you start using sunscreen, they will fade away. Maybe not completely, though...

I have freckles. It's a love/hate relationship. My five-year old son told me the other day that I'm not pretty because I have freckles all over my face. The little poo!!! I've posted here about using licorice extract as a whitener. It definitely works, but you should wait until your skin has cleared up before introducing another ingredient into your regime. Try using the sunscreen just in those problem areas. I'm going to post tomorrow about home-made sunscreen with zinc oxide and hemp oil. Perhaps you could try that!

  48. Hi Miri, thanks so much for this article. I have had a blackhead ridden nose and chin for a few years and in the past two years I started getting a ton of white heads, flesh colored bumps, and the occasional cysts on my chin. (I know, super gross).

I am super excited to try hemp oil! I've been researching on oils forever and felt kind of hopeless as every oil I researched had worked miracles for those with acne but clogged pores for those with congestion.

I have a question about the SA toner. I have been using the Paula's choice BHAs for almost a year, and they have helped somewhat to reduce the black heads but not really helped much with stubborn whiteheads and cysts. I am wondering if I can continue use of the Paula's choice 2% BHA liquid (as far as I am concerned the ph balance is correct) with the water wash method and hemp oil for the same results?

    Thanks so much!

    1. Hi! Thanks so much for visiting! It sounds like you would benefit a lot from the hemp oil. The hemp oil will facilitate healthier, more fluid sebum, which will prevent future clogs (including blackheads) from forming. The SA toner would clear the skin of existing clogs. So, really, it's the hemp you're looking for. I'm doing a post right now about Paula's Choice BHA toner, to explore its efficacy for this purpose. Please take a look!

  49. Miri!

First off, I am so thankful that I found your amazingly helpful blog! You have inspired me to see past commercialism and start focusing on doing whats best and natural for my skin/health!

I have been using hemp seed oil and your SA toner regimen for about three weeks now and can already tell the amazing difference it has made in my skin. My pores always seemed to be clogged and I tend to obsess over getting the gunk out and sometimes the clog will become infected or create a scab (not good) But this problem has decreased since starting this routine.

I must say however, I got a little excited after making my SA toner and used it religiously on my nose (my most visible clogs) and had a bad dry skin reaction. It's been about a week since and I am still trying to heal the wound. I have been putting a mixture of lavender essential oil, hemp oil, and calendula ointment on to aid in the healing process and it is healing better than past scabs I have had. Do you have any advice on that front?

As I said before I can tell my skin is on its way to becoming healthy and radiant! My clogs have somewhat decreased (its only been 3 weeks) but I am slightly curious if my type of "clogs" are similar to what this regimen is aimed to help. When I look closely in a mirror it often seems that every pore on my nose and chin is clogged. The pores on my nose are definitely larger and more noticeable, but not enough to make me feel overly self-conscious. The clogs aren't "blackheads" it seems they are all filled with white gunk, or like the last commenter said above, flesh colored bumps. I can easily pinch the gunk out of each pore, a habit I am trying hard to stop. I can't really imagine what the skin on my nose/chin would look like completely clog-free.

I have read through this article and comment section several times and am trusting in 4ish months I will have a better idea if this solution is right for my skin clogs. Maybe I am just searching for some reassurance? ..another bad habit of mine.

Also, one last thing, this is a bit off topic but all this talk of natural skincare has inspired me to do some research on improving my overall health, more specifically researching holistic health. I have come across a practice I am eager to try, oil pulling. For those who aren't familiar with the term, I took this explanation from livingthenourishedlife.com -
"What is oil pulling? In a society riddled with complicated, expensive and even dangerous detoxification methods, oil pulling offers a technique that is refreshingly simple. Oil pulling therapy is a practice taken from Ayurvedic medicine that involves swishing, or pulling, unrefined oil in your mouth for several minutes. The modern adaptation of oil pulling has only recently become popular in Western society, but already many are reporting amazing results from this unorthodox therapy."

Have you tried this practice? If so, do you use hemp oil? I have read many examples using sesame or coconut oil (cold pressed/unrefined) but have found little to no articles mentioning hemp seed oil. I was curious what you thought of the whole thing..

My apologies for this novel of a comment. You're awesome, and thanks again for all you do!

"mixture of lavender essential oil, hemp oil, and calendula ointment " sounds AMAZING! Just make sure there's nothing comedogenic in the calendula ointment.

Oil pulling is not something I have looked into. I will, though, and will do a post about it.

PLEASE let us know how your skin fares in the next few months, Kate!!!

Well I enjoy talking to you ..since now you're my new BFF !
But I would like to ask you ...if you put the sun screen mix with the hemp oil on here ? oh and you said every day ..all over my face ? or just where I have the discoloration?
Also, my skin is totally cleared YEY !! but still ...lots of smaller blackheads on my nose :(

Can i use something more to 'cleanse' my face with other than with just 'water' ..? or there's no need.
Also, I do use toner ...but maybe it's not helping as much ? does it make a difference what toner I use ? or is SA the BEST way to get rid of these blackheads (yes, will take time ) but it's taking forever. What else would you suggest ? as cleanser or mask ?
I've been using the hemp oil as an under-eye moisturizer as well....or would you suggest another oil or its good enough? I have lines :((

But overall so far so good, just these brown areas around my eyes and the blackheads. I'ts not as bad as i make it sound, but you know how it is ...;)

    Thank You my DEAR

  52. I may have to try this out. I have been using the oil cleansing method for about two months now, my mixture is 4 parts hemp seed oil and 1 part castor oil. I hear castor oil is very drying but its suppose to unclog pores, so thats what I've been trying to do. I have horribly sensitive and overly dry skin so I cannot use over the counter drug store face washes. When I heard about the OCM I knew I just had to give it a shot! I suffer from hormonal acne around my mouth and chin area and have numerous amounts of blackheads on my nose. Ive tried many things to try and loosen up that gunk and get it out of my pores but nothing has worked. I also have very enlarged pores and are easy to see, I feel as though that makes it easier for them to get clogged. I cant even wear foundation without breaking out in acne. So I go natural all day everyday. My skin is fairly nice, I do however break out around my time of the month, like I said I suffer from hormonal acne. But not just that, I get those nasty HUGE under the skin, unpoppable, cystic acne. And boy do they hurt. Anyway, Ive been doing this OCM for about 2 months and it has helped a lot. But not enough. I use to get small whiteheads EVERYWHERE around my mouth and on my chin. And the ocm has made them go away (thankfully) but has not made my acne go away. Im going to try just straight hemp seed oil. I really hope it works bc im about to give up on my skin and say thats just the way the world turns, and that i will forever have troublesome skin. Thank you for this post, I shall return in a month or so with some (hopefully) good results!

Ok, I'm going to atempt to make the tonner...LOL good luck to me ... but i was just following up on your insturstions and although it's pretty straight forward, I have few questions to ask you.

    1. hot water (hydrosol or distiled) ...can't i just boil regular tap water ?
    2. if i put more SA powder is it better ..or just a tiny bit ? I don't belive my skin is sensetive(just normal)
    3. If i want to make enough for a small bottole ...what are the meassurements like ?
4.Add two drops of Triethanolamine at a time until the pH is between 3.5 and 4.5. .? what does that mean ? How would i know it's there ?

The bottle that you have pictured, is it made from exactly what is specified ? If it's not too expensive I would rather purchase a smaple to test it. I know i'm going to mess up somewhere and drive you crazy ..LOL ...

Last question, can you tell me under what section is your sun screen mix with the hemp oil.

Once again, not enough thank youss for saving my skin....and keep it improving.

    1. Hi Mary!!!

      1. hot water (hydrosol or distiled) ...can't i just boil regular tap water ?

Yes, you can. If you boil it, you'll see the minerals float to the top. Skim those off before using the water.

      2. if i put more SA powder is it better ..or just a tiny bit ? I don't believe my skin is sensitive(just normal)

You could put more SA powder in, but don't go above a 3 or 4 percent infusion. You may have to add a bit more triethanolamine to your blend.

      3. If i want to make enough for a small bottle ...what are the measurements like ?

That would depend on the number of ounces contained in the bottle. Let me know and I'll figure it out for you. It can be a bit confusing!

4.Add two drops of Triethanolamine at a time until the pH is between 3.5 and 4.5. .? what does that mean ? How would i know it's there ?

Add a drop and then use your pH strip. If it's too acidic (number is too low), add another drop and then test again. Keep doing this until the pH is up to between 3.5 and 4.5.

I would be MORE than happy to mix you up a sample and make a special listing for you. Please let me know!

I haven't created a post for hemp oil sunscreen, but I PROMISE you I'll do it this weekend!

  55. Hello Miri. I am in my early 60's and suffer from mild rosacea and sebacious hyperplasia. I have never had acne, but did suffer like most teens with occasional breakouts and my skin leans to the tempermental side. Wondering if your program of water cleaning, hemp oil as moisturizer and SA toner would be of any use at all to keeping the sebacious hyperplasia somewhat controlled. Will it help or hinder the rosacea? Thanks for your input.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Donna! Thanks so much for visiting!

I would have to say that this regime would probably not have a lot of impact on the sebaceous hyperplasia, but it would inhibit any related problems. For those readers who don't know, sebaceous hyperplasia is a condition of enlarged sebaceous glands. The result is something that looks like a clogged pore, but isn't. This is most often a genetic condition and doesn't have anything to do with overproduction of sebum or unbalanced fatty acids in the sebum. It's treated with acid, lasers, or heavy duty acne drugs such as acutane. That being said, hemp oil is an anti-inflammatory, and may help reduce the visible affects of the condition.

Hemp oil is great for rosacea. It has anti-inflammatory and anti-redness properties, and there are raves about this treatment all over the internet. Salicylic acid is not a known trigger for rosacea, but it could be an irritant. I would probably go with witch hazel or rosewater for a toner in your case. The water only and hemp oil cleansing methods would suit your skin perfectly. Let me know what you decide and how you progress!

  58. I am loving hemp oil cleansing but finding it very difficult to get the smell out of washcloths and I am worried oil residue remains on them- I have washed them twice with soap, baking soda and vinegar rinse and they still smell like hemp- how do you wash your cloths?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Hi Jezebell! I wash my cloths with my regular laundry, and yes, they definitely get saturated pretty fast. I really don't think there's any way to get them completely oil-free... I just buy a new pack of cotton washcloths every six months or so.

  60. I just ordered your kit. So excited to start using. After 10 years of suffering from this horrible seb derm disease, i am hoping this will be the answer! i have done everything, like yourself, with no results. in fact, my pores have become so clogged that my beautiful thick eyelashes, eyebrows, and hair have been falling out for 6 months. this is devastating. i am 24 years old, dealing with incredible hair loss with no answer from any derms. i exfoliate my face every night, much too harshly, but that is the only way i can remove the hardened dead skin. so on top of the unsightly scales and flakes, my face is permanently red and is starting to get broken capillaries from all the rubbing. funny enough, i have tiny pores, but that is starting to change the worse the condition gets. i hope your kit will show some improvement...i can't take this anymore!

  61. Hello, I'm new to this OCM. I've read a lot of info but something is not very clear. I see the OCM uses 2 oils - one drying (castor) one emoliating (EVOO). When you use hemp oil, you don't combine with another oil? Thank you.

    1. Hi Erin! I do a mini oil cleanse when I wear makeup (maybe once a week) and a long oil cleanse about once a month. I don't feel the little grains every time, but my skin is clear for the first time in my adult life, so I'm happy!

Can you describe your skin to me?

  65. Hi Miri, I just found your blog today and I'm addicted. I apologize if you have already answered the following questions and I missed it:

    1. You do a deep OCM with Hemp Oil 1 x month and a mini oil cleansing on the days you wear makeup, is that right? I don't wear foundation daily, but I do wear eyeliner, mascara, and sunscreen everyday. How do you suggest I wash my face daily to fully cleanse the eye make-up and sunscreen?

    2. I use an AHA serum because SA doesn't seem to agree with my skin. Do you see this being problematic?

    3. On the days when you water wash only, are you moisturizing with a drop or two of hemp oil? In other words, does hemp oil go on your face daily, one way or another?

    Thanks,
    Samantha

    Replies
    1. Hi Samantha! Yes: I do deep OCM once a month or so and a mini oil cleansing on makeup days AND sunscreen days. It's okay to use this method every day, if necessary. On days when I do only water wash, I use hemp oil as a moisturizer. Hemp oil goes on my face every day, for sure!

Try this hemp oil sunscreen: http://practicalbohemianbeauty.blogspot.com/2014/04/non-clogging-homemade-sunscreen-with.html

As far as the AHA serum, the only problematic thing would be its other ingredients. Perhaps you could make your own AHA toner so you are sure what goes into it. You can purchase AHA at a cosmetics ingredients store (like makingcosmetics.com, bulkactives, etc.) and use it in the SA toner recipe in place of the SA. Check the pH and add your balancer in the same way as directed in that recipe. Let me know how you get along!

    2. Thank you so much for your speedy reply! Ok, so if I need to do a mini oil cleanse daily, then should I skip the hemp oil as a moisturizer (unless it is a rare water only wash day)? It sounds like hemp oil is safe to use on the eyes to remove eyeliner and mascara, is that right?

I am very excited to make this sunscreen, thank you so much!

And thank you for your advise on the AHA serum. I am starting to wonder if my skin would do fine with SA and if it was just the other ingredients in the SA products I was using that caused problems. I'll try your SA toner and see how it goes. Thanks again!

      Delete
    3. I usually skip the hemp oil as moisturizer if I've done a mini oil cleanse, but you could still tone and then use a drop of hemp oil if you like.

Try the SA! Can you describe your skin situation to me? I'd like to get a better idea of what's going on with you...

      Delete
    4. OK, sounds good. Thanks for answering my questions! I'll definitely try the SA. Here is the story with my skin. I never had acne or problematic skin until I hit 23 years old (I'm now 34). I have a lot of redness and enlarged pores on the cheek portion of my t-zone, and the skin surrounding my nostrils has a lot of white clogs. They are not pimples, but white bumps under the skin (if I stretch the skin or scrape it in the shower, white stuff comes out). I am extremely sensitive to oil. Oil breaks me out. I have a 6 month old baby and my current breakouts are happening in the exact spots where his head makes contact with my face when we snuggle. Whatever oil is on his skin and in his hair breaks me out. Most blemishes are the closed kind that just hurt and get swollen. I have a lot of red/brown spots on my face from old blemishes as well. My face is kind of a mess :).

  66. Hello! Thank you so so much for this brilliant blog! I've been cleansing and moisturising with hemp seed oil for about 4 weeks now and I just wondered if i was doing it correctly. It has broke me out with lots of tiny spots on my chin and forehead where i usually get them and these areas seem to be covered in tiny whiteheads under the skin!! Is this a purging process or am I wasting my time and it's just not agreeing with me? I do not use anything else on my skin - no makeup, toner, suncream (about to try your homemade one when my skin has balanced!). I really hope this is some sort of purging stage and it gets better but at the moment, it's getting worse and I'm starting to feel really self-concious. Please Help!

    1. Hi Hannah! Please do not give up. Sometimes this happens at first. I almost gave up so many times, but I was SO convinced this would work that I just kept muddling along until eventually, my skin was (and still is) completely clear. It took four months. My skin was very bad, with clogs ALL over...seemingly in every single pore. There is absolutely nothing in hemp oil that could hurt your skin. Please keep going and don't forget to keep checking in here so we can keep up with your progress. xxxxx Don't give up, lady!!!

I am also having the same problem . 4 weeks into hemp seed and i am seeing lot of tiny spots on my face . i want to keep on using hemp seed oil . since my skin feels so calm after using it. I used to feel a lot of itching following by pimples on my skin earlier and itching has reduced a lot. so i want to continue using it.

    3. I haven't heard back from Hannah, so I'm not sure. But since I've done this myself, I can tell you that 4 weeks is still quite early. It takes several months for your face to really clear up. The hemp seed oil WILL help you. I promise. Please keep me posted!

Also i am not using SA as my face is very sensitive and i am too afraid to use it . I have a very oily skin as well prior to using this also . its been more than 15 years i have ever felt freshness in my face . there have been times when skin has become clear for 2-3 months and i have got complements of a glowing face . but it again goes bad and lately it has been more bad and good.

  67. Im nervous to start this treatment. I just purchased nutriva organic hemp oil from amazon and haven't tried it yet, I'm afraid I may have a reaction to it. For a facial cleanser I use "Say Yes to Tomatoes," which contains SA. To start off slowly can I just start using the hemp seed oil as a moisturizer morning and night before I start cleansing with it? Im just really nervous. I wanted to switch to organic products long ago so I used Aveda products and had HORRIBLE reactions from it, just nervous I may have the same thing. Could I possibly have breakouts from this treatment?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Alexa! I understand why you're nervous. I tried EVERYTHING before I finally discovered the wondrous hemp oil!

By all means, start off slowly, just using the hemp as a moisturizer. It is (in my experience) impossible for hemp to cause problems for your skin. If you continue to break out I would immediately suspect the other products you are using. There are hidden comedogenic agents in almost every commercially available product out there, even if they say otherwise.

Keep with it, and let us know how it goes for you!

      Delete
    2. I started slowly by using it as a moisturizer, and now I am using to to wash my face! I have to say, I love the results so far! My skin is softer, more even, and I have less breakouts! I have only been using it for a week but so far so good. I had to learn not to be freaked out by the fact that Im washing my face with an oil. It feels weird like I am not cleaning my face, but Im getting used to it. Thanks so much for your blog its been very helpful! I will keep you posted with my long term results!

    3. Awesome, Alexa. It is VERY weird at first, getting used to oil as a cleanser. Definitely let us know how it works for you!

    4. Still love the oil, but I am starting to notice these weird bumps on my forehead that I have never head before. Looks a lot like congestion (poor cell turnover.) Have you noticed this? If so how do you get rid of it? I bought some witch hazel and will see how that works. If you could let me know when you can that would be great! College graduation coming up!

      Delete
    5. Alexa, unfortunately this method takes several months to clear up your face. The congestion you're experiencing is absolutely normal and may not be smoothed out by the time of your graduation. I'm sorry! I know it's frustrating, but stick with it and you will be very pleased in the end. Witch hazel is fine, but the only thing that clear your face is continued use of the hemp oil. Anything else (including the SA toner I talk about so much) just helps get rid of existing clogs, rather than actually "curing" anything or preventing them. The hemp is the curative factor.

      keep us posted, please!
      xx

    6. Ya I am becoming pretty frustrated. I have many clogs and some painful cystic zits. I will just stick with this method. I cleanse with the oil morning and night and I moisturize with it, is that to much? Should I be eating it to?

I read how you've mentioned hemp oil being the highest in linoleic acid but isn't grapeseed oil even higher?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Ashley! Grapeseed oil is very high in linoleic acid, and would probably work fine. The level of fatty acids is different in each batch of each oil, so profiles can be a bit ambiguous. I chose hemp because, in my research, I found that it is consistently highest (or at least in the top 3) and I want to support the hemp industry. Any oil that is high in linoleic acid would work.

  76. First off, thank you for all the useful information you provide on your site. I've been using your ocm with hemp oil for exactly 6 weeks and am having some issues. I have been following your instructions carefully (water wash in the am with a clean washcloth and in the pm if I don't have makeup on, mini oil cleansing if I have worn makeup that day, moisturizing with hemp only and have done 2 full oil cleanses.) Before I started the ocm I had lots of clogs and small bumps and dry skin. I would usually have 2-3 large painful pimples per month, almost always on my chin or forehead. My issue is that since starting the ocm I have 3-4 large painful pimples on my face at all times, still always on my chin and forehead. And then new ones will pop up as those ones are drying up. My face is a mess! I do realize that it took 4 months for your skin to clear up and I feel like I could hang in there if my skin was just staying the same throughout the process, but it's so much worse! Like I said, I've been using the method for 6 weeks and it just seems to be getting worse every day. I don't want to give up but it's much easier to live worn the clogs and little bumps than these huge pimples. Any advice? What could I be doing wrong? Thank you so much!

    1. Carolyn, I'm so sorry for the late reply. I hope you're still hanging in there with the hemp oil. I hear from some readers that their skin got worse before getting better. Mine didn't necessarily get worse when I started with the hemp, but it didn't seem to be getting any better for months. I was so convinced, intellectually, that it work, though, that I stuck with it. It finally cleared my skin in 4 months and has maintained clear skin for several years now. Please let us know how it's going for you!

  78. Thank you for your great post - as off today I have stopped using organic coconut oil. Due to the good reviews in ill reading online I kept at it for a month hoping that after that point I will see 'clear skin'. Since my 20's I have suffered with mild acne. (Comedons) Had a baby last year and up until April this year my skin was so clear and fed now I am back to where I started - maybe a it more annoyed due to the fact that I think I have escalated the problem with CO . I have just purchased hemp oil through conscience skin. When you say that you do not do the Ocm do you still cleanse with the hemp oil. What is the difference between the two if that is the case? Also, did/do you take hemp oil orally. I have been told that the hemp from conscience Is not edible so I must look for one else where that can do both. Any recommendations. Again that you in advance. And I hope this will help. Feel feel insecure about m y skin at the moment.

  79. Hi Miri! I really really want the oil cleansing method to work. I have normal skin, that can be acne prone, with clogging. I have had clogging for years in my nose, and chin and forehead and temples also my back and shoulders. My skin looks pretty good except when I try to squeeze out my plugs, it leaves red spots and sometimes scabs and scars on my back. Its not super heavy, but I can see if and feel it. I first started OCM 2.5 weeks ago using a mix of 50% castor oil and 50% hempseed oil because I read that castor oil was the oil that actually removes the plugs. After about a week and a half, I noticed I was getting more clogging. Its was frustrating because I thought this was my answer. I stopped using for two days and it still was bad. I then tried JUST hempseed oil however, its been a week with no improvement. I still see the clogging and when I am massaging, I feel the plugs pretty obviously, but nothing comes out or extracts itself - I use it with hot water or in the shower. Im getting frustrated because I have an issue of picking at my skin and extracting things, and I thought this would help solve that issue but they are still in there and I have not yet once felt the oil take a plug out. I sometimes wet my face, and massage for at least 2-5 minutes. I press hard, thinking it will help get the oil in deeper. I try to lay the warm cloth on my face but its cool within 3 seconds, so thats not doing much. I use a microfiber cloth. I just am getting sick of feeling and seeing these clogs, with nothing to help get them out except for my own extraction which is not healthy to my skin, but eases my eagerness to have them removed. How long does this take? do you still have clogs? Why wont these just break down and come out?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi! Definitely stick with JUST the hemp oil. Castor oil does not work on clog-prone skin. It just makes it worse. The hemp oil will most certainly work, but it takes time. It took a good four months for my skin to clear completely. Try not to pick/extract (easier said than done, I know). I still get clogs, but only one or two around my period. Other than that, honestly, I get no clogs. Every pore on my face was clogged before I started using hemp oil. I'm not kidding. My face was like that for 20 years and I tried EVERYTHING to cure it. Hemp oil is the way! Be patient! xxx

  82. Hi there,

    I am seeking advice!

I have combination skin. It is either dry or oily with a few breakouts here and there. I am fair skinned, 25, female. The weirdest thing happened to me recently... I developed clogged pores on the right side of my face only (all along my cheek bone and they are only visible in certain light but they are terribly annoying). I have tried everything... SA, BHA, gels, cleansers, you name it and nothing seems to be working. I tried OCM last year around June and suffered from the worst breakout ever. My skin before OCM? Perfect besides my time of month. Ever since OCM, I have become a skin fanatic, overly obsessed and constantly on the quest to find what will work for my skin. I want 1-4 products in my mirror that I can totally rely on (my Holy Grail products) but I have yet to find that! Currently, I am messing around with some Murad and Mario Badescu products but I am not loving them but will stick with them until they are all used up.
The oils I used for OCM were tamanu, castor, jojoba and grapeseed. I broke out everywhere and grapeseed clogged my pores like never before. The reason why I wanted to try OCM in the first place was because of the ingredients (natural) and it was cheap!
I am so intrigued with HEMP SEED OIL but my brain can't take another "purge" or any of that. What are your thoughts? I want these clogged pores gone but am so nervous...

    1. Hi! So sorry you/re going through this. The reason your skin broke out worse than ever is that the oils you used were high in oleic acid. You need an oil that's high in linoleic acid, most notably hemp. TRY IT. In my opinion, it is the ONLY thing that will cure your closed comedones. I never went through a purge state, per se, though it took months for my skin to clear up. It never got worse, I mean. It just stayed about the same and then suddenly, after four months, it got better and it's been perfectly clear ever since. Good luck and please keep us posted!

Treatment Regine:I have a pretty big tolerance for marijuana, so I started off with a full grain of rice sized amount of oil instead of a half grain. I gradually increased the dosage every night until I reached a full gram each night. The standard protocol for Rick Simpson Oil is ingesting a total of 60 grams over the course of 2-3 months, but I had 70 grams in total for safe measure. I used the excess as a topical skin care treatment, attacking the visible brown spots on my face and neck.
3 months later, my cancer was in full remission. Within 4 months, I am cancer-free and officially received a clean bill of health from my doctors. What they don’t know is that the majority of my treatment was using the Rick Simpson Oil. I did use some of the medication they prescribed, but it was in combination with the oil.

  87. CANNABIS OIL IS THE NATURAL REMEDY TO CANCER

I used cannabis oil to cure my father's brain cancer. On April 10th 2014 I brought my father to the emergency room with a splitting headache and projectile vomiting. i thought it was a bad migraine but later found out that it was a brain tumor. On February 12th he had surgery and the surgeon told me and the lab work later confirmed that he had a Glioblastoma. It is the most deadly and fast moving brain tumor someone can have. The doctor told our family that my father had about some weeks to live if he didn’t take any radiation and if he did take radiation it might give him a year. My father was in the hospital for eight days. We were not sure what to do so we took the doctor’s referral and went to radiation, about a week after he got out of the hospital. My father only took five days of radiation and it made him feel terrible, and sapped all of his energy. The surgeon removed all of the tumor he could see. After some months there was a regrowth of the brain cancer. Some friends came forward and told us alternative ways people were fighting and winning the battle against cancer with cannabis oil. Since the doctors did not hold out any hope we decided to throw our hope on the cannabis oil treatment and he did not take any more radiation. We bought the cannabis oil from the National Cancer Institute through email contact
nationalcancerinstitute@aol.com and started the cannabis oil in February 2015. After 2 months cannabis oil treatment, MRI scan showed dramatic improvement and father third month cannabis oil treatment looked good, his brain was clean and the hole where they removed the tumor was empty except for a tiny line around a portion of the inside of the hole. The doctor said that it could be scar tissue.
After the 3 month cannabis oil, MRI shows his brain was completely clean. There was no cancer at all. The doctor said that it was a miracle and that was how my father was cured of his brain cancer with cannabis oil.

  88. Hi Miri,

Thanks for your amazing blog post! It's been so helpful! I've been suffering with acne for over 20 years and have pretty much tried everything out there. I am currently using natural oil based products (cleanser, toner, moisturiser) that contain jasmine oil, castor oil, jojoba oil, essential oils of lemon and orange, and a tiny bit of lavendar oil. Other ingredients include manuka honey, organic apple cidar vinegar, organic pineapple and apple extract, pectin and a few more ingredients (none of which are hamrful). My skin has cleared up since I started using the products but I still break out randomly, especially in the jaw area and I always seem to have little sebum plugs on my face that aren't blackheads or whileheads, but like little worms when squeezed (I also get blackheads and whiteheads). My skin is quite congested.

I wear make up everyday and that's only because I am not confident enough to not wear make up due to my bad skin. I also breakout on my upper and lower back - would I use the same method for my face and back. I think my acne is genetic and probably hormonal too, but I'm willing to try anything. My skin doesn't get too oily and is rarely every dry - I'd say it's on the normal side and isn't sensitive at all. I have pretty tough skin.

What regime do you recommend given I wear makeup everyday? Should I be using hemp oil everyday? I've also been looking at the SA toner that you made. How do you test the pH level? Also, how long does it last? Do you just make it up each time you use it?

    Thanks so much Miri!

  92. I've never thought about oil dissolving oil. That's actually pretty smart. Thank you for sharing!

  93. Hi Miri,

I have read through so much of your stuff and also googled a lot about this. .I have had bad skin since I was 15 (now 35). Not a single day have i had no spots on my face... usually always on my chin. Either large painful and itchy cystic acne or just pimples that themselves would last for weeks and usually scar. My pores I guess are all blocked too with blackheads all over but not too many large ones just murky looking smooth ones if you understand? So I started using coconut oil to cleanse with everyday and I did this for maybe 3 or 4 weeks before I changed to hemp seed oil. The coconut oil started to give me large acne on my chin - worse than normal but also down my neck which I have never had before! I was doubtful but didn't think it would be purging as I never used to get acne here before? So I've been using hemp for about 2 weeks now and I realised I am overdoing it from your info but do love how my face feels and it is smoother little by little each day (I also do Tumeric masks each day which seems to help settle things a lot too). So my question is do you think my recent bad skin on my neck was from the coconut oil and should I just use the hemp just on my face if so? Also I know you said it took 4 months to clear up your skin but how did this happen. You don't think it purges so was your acne the same until it suddenly just stopped new acne all together? I will stick it out cos I am desperate for something to work after so long but I am just a little concerned that my face, or rather my neck got so bad when it was always only my face that suffered before. And finally please what brand could you recommend for Aus. I have sani hemp but saw that if is in fact hemp from China and just bottled here so I am a little worried about quality, or keeping the oil cold and pure in transit if I have to order some online. Thank you soooo much for all the information I have gained so far and for any advice you may offer!

  94. I was wondering if anyone has mixed their hemp oil with anything?
I've tried many OCM recipes and I was considering hemp (as base carrier oil) with some additional rose hip and evening primrose. Maybe even add in a little Frankincense. Thoughts please!!

    1. hello! i've tried mixing the hemp with other oils, but it always results in clogged pores for me. if you have a problem with clogged pores, i'd definitely stick with just the hemp. essential oil is fine because (unless they are mixed with jojoba oil, as frankincense, rose, and neroli often are), they are virtually non-comedogenic. jojo

  95. In 2013, my annual PSA test showed an increase. I knew that PSA, which stands for prostate-specific antigen, is a protein that can sometimes be an indicator of prostate cancer when the level begins to rise. When my PSA score reached 5.6 and remained at that level for about a year, my doctor near my home in Oakland, Tennessee, just outside Memphis, suggested that I see an urologist for a biopsy. The urologist took 12 samples of prostate tissue, and one of the samples was 25 percent cancerous. That was the first time I heard the big “c” word. Immediately I was in a daze that lasted about a week. No matter how you prepare or what you expect to hear, when a doctor tells you that you have cancer, it’s a shock. Questions were racing through my mind: What will life be like now? How will things change? What will happen to me? Fishing season As I began to take steps toward deciding on my treatment, many options were presented to me. The urologist who diagnosed me recommended prostate removal. But he also gave me a book of 101 questions about prostate cancer and referred me to two other doctors at different facilities.
At the end of those consultations, I had several options to consider, i decided to try Cannabis oil because i have read a lot about it, i order the medication online via:
healthycannabisoil@gmail.com, and the oil was delivered to me and was told that after 2 weeks for treatment i should go for check up and i did. My PSA level begins to decrease. i want everyone reading this to know that am now cancer free.

  96. I had comedonal acne and alot of clogged pores. Mine was caused because I had little bits of oil or waxes under my skin which created tiny bumps all over my face, especially in the T-zone. First, I unclogged my pores - and then used a face wash that was deep cleansing. To unclog my pores, I used the Citrus Clear Blackhead mask - i used this twice a week. And then I used the Citrus Clear Control face wash - its super strong - but its exactly what my comedonal acne needed. . . you have to get under those pores!
