blood money: private prisons and the border crisis

who is making money off the travesty at the border?

who benefits from such a huge influx of detainees?

ANSWER: private, for-profit prison corporations; the six major banks that fund them; all those shareholders; and the politicians who do their bidding.

  • Attorney General Sessions has implemented a series of policies that increases the number of incarcerated persons in the US (this time targeting immigrants).
  • This benefits private prison groups, PARTICULARLY, the GEO GROUP.
  • GEO Group is a major donor to conservative causes, individual Republican candidates, and even some (though fewer) Democratic candidates.
  • Sessions has personal ties to this corporation.
  • This appears to be some kind of a set-up.

More than 60 percent of all detainees are held in private detention facilities owned by fewer than 15 corporations. The largest of these are the GEO Group and CoreCivic (formerly Corrections Corp of America or CCA). These are taxpayer funded (2 billion per year as of now) and many pay detainees 1 dollar per day to clean and cook, so the facility does not have to hire staff at minimum wage. These prisons are notoriously bad for the prison population, but that's a whole other story!

These enormous corporations are funded by six major banks: Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, BNP Paribas, SunTrustU.S. Bancorp and Wells Fargo (source: https://www.prisonlegalnews.org/news/2017/jul/28/banks-profit-loans-private-prison-industry/)

It is my firm belief that AG Sessions orchestrated this travesty (at least partially) to enrich private prison corporations, six major banks, all their shareholders, and the GEO Group specifically.

Below is a timeline of events relating to the GEO group and our government (particularly AG Sessions and several individual politicians), with links to sources. Entries highlighted in green are policy changes or legislation.

This article is the first of a series on the GEO Group. Next, I will look at donations to conservative causes and politicians in more depth.

Please forgive the bad resolution here. I spent HOURS trying to get this to look right! If you click on the picture, you will be taken to a Google Docs link, where the image is much easier to see.
