Essential Oil Tables

When purchasing essential oils for aromatherapeutic purposes, make sure you are buying PURE ESSENTIAL OILS and not Perfume or Fragrance oils. Only Pure Essential Oils have therapeutic qualities as they are made from the plants themselves, contain no synthetics, and are not adulterated with other oils.

In the following chart, you will notice that each Essential Oil is listed with two names.  The first is its common name, the second, in italics, is its Latin binomial.  When purchasing the oils through a retailer or wholesaler, be sure to check the Latin binomial, or the Latin designation of the genus and species of plant used. There are many oils being sold under the same name, but being of different species and having different physiological effects.  For instance, Cypress essential oil is distilled from the Cupressus sempervirens tree.  However, many companies sell the essential oil of Juniperus virgiana as “Cypress” although it is from a different species (Juniperus is not even a Cypress tree) and has completely different therapeutic properties.  To avoid confusion and possible negative results, it’s important to buy only those oils that bear the Latin binomial as indicated below on the label.
