just like your skin, your hair needs a moisturizer!

this homemade hair mist will give your hair the moisture it craves so it stays shiny and soft even under the hot sun.

this mist will do three things:

  1. add moisture
  2. smooth the hair shaft
  3. create a seal to prevent water loss

1. adding moisture just means adding water.

2. smoothing the hair shaft

the hair shaft looks smooth when its cuticle (protective outer layer) is lying flat.

the cuticle is composed of thousands of tiny scales overlapping each other.

in a perfect world, the scales lay flat, creating a barrier that seals in the moisture and protects the hair shaft from outside irritants and breakage.

when the scales stand up on end, the inner shaft is unprotected so it loses even more moisture, is prone to breakage, and appears jagged and brittle. this can be caused by many things, including heat damage, dryness, and an alkaline environment (shampoos and soaps are alkaline).

one way to get the cuticle to lie flat is to counteract the alkalinity with something slightly more acidic on the pH scale (conditioners are slightly acidic).

3. create a seal to prevent water loss

any moisturizer (from vaseline to creme de la mer) is essentially a barrier preventing or hindering evaporation. these can include oils, waxes, lotions, balms, gels, etc.

the ingredients

so with these three things in mind, i chose these ingredients for the hair mist:
  • rosewater
  • orange blossom water
  • aloe vera gel
  • sweet almond oil

orange blossom and rose water moisten the hair and are slightly acidic, causing the cuticle scales to lie down.

the aloe is also slightly acidic, causing the scales to lie down. aloe also coats the hair shaft and, together with the sweet almond oil, provides a seal to hold in moisture and protect the cuticle.

aloe also seems to give my hair a little volume and body, which is always welcome.

how to make it

  • in an 8 oz bottle, combine 3 ounces rosewater and 3 ounces orange blossom water.
  • add 1 tablespoon of aloe vera gel
  • add 1 teaspoon of sweet almond oil
keep it in the fridge!!!!

how to use it

  • shake it up well to mix all the ingredients together
  • flip your hair over your head and spray until your hair is fairly saturated
  • finger comb or use a regular comb to distribute the mist evenly
  • let it dry
if it feels crunchy, this means that the aloe is not evenly distributed across your hair. aloe gets a little crispy when it dries.
