A mix of indie, Americana, and pop, High Road embodies self discovery and celebrating empowering choice. The full album, "Love Remains," won't be ready until October, but judging by this single, it's worth the wait.

Holly Bruce is an accomplished performing artist, singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, composer, and healing arts practitioner, who also has her own home recording studio and a great sense of style. Holly is a true bohemian.

the early years

Largely self-taught, Holly began playing music at a very early age. She later studied music composition at the San Francisco Conservatory.

miri: how old were you when you started writing music? do you remember the first song you wrote?

holly: I remember as early as around age six, going to the piano to figure out how to play music that I heard my sister play and would make up my own alternate endings. It started with composing music (mainly on piano) and separately I would write poetry or simple songs. Later it developed into combining chords with lyrics. Being a big fan of Jewel, Alanis Morissette, Tori Amos and later Fiona Apple, and seeing them process their life through music, I felt a strong need to learn to express my feelings through song. That being said, it was mostly piano compositions until around age 16.

miri: how did you learn to play guitar?

holly: I learned guitar around age 14, mostly by getting a guitar and strumming chords. I would “follow my inspiration” and play / find sounds that matched what I was feeling and i would also figure out songs of other artists that I loved by ear. Later I had some private lessons however, struggled with some learning difficulties.

the album

While studying in San Francisco, Holly discovered a love of the healing & spiritual arts. This love is reflected in her music. The upcoming album “Love Remains” is a collection of songs composed by Holly in the last decade that highlight her own healing journey of love, loss, grief, self discovery, and transformation. Her soulful voice & lyrics convey a wide range of emotional depth, inviting her listeners to join her on that journey.

the community

Holly has put together an amazing group of musicians to bring "Love Remains" to life. Studio recording for the album began in summer 2019 and has developed into an epic project that features award winning performers and artists including: Lex Price (bassist for k.d. Lang, Miranda Lambert, Indigo Girls); Brian Allen (bassist for Brandi Carlile, Beth Hart, Secret Sisters, Sarah Bareilles, Jason Isbell); Lauren Conklin (Violin for Miley Cyrus, Florida Georgia Line); Cremaine Booker (Cellist for Hans Zimmer, Carrie Underwood, India Arie, Martina McBride, Jewel, LeAnn Rhimes, Lauren Diagle); Tim Galloway; Kevin Daily (electric guitar); Shawn Burns (Artist, Electric Guitar); Jason Erie (Artist, Guitar); and John Dennis (Artist, Guitar) among others. Producer, Chris Brush (Nashville-based Session Drummer & Producer) wears many hats on the project. Holly sings, arranges and records background vocals for the album from her home studio in Hendersonville.

miri: how did you get all those heavy-hitting musicians to play on your album?

holly: Nashville is an incredible community. I have met some really awesome people and artists playing music over the years at writers nights, etc. One thing lead to the next and I met my current producer, Chris Brush, who is touring drummer apart of the community. I’ll just add that this project has turned out to be way bigger than anticipated. That includes budget. I felt it was important though each step of the way to have quality players and sound. That being said, have poured my sweat and my savings into making it the best possible and am planning to do a fundraiser campaign to to help support the marketing part moving forward and hopefully generate some movement, joy & excitement with it.

miri: beyond the obvious technical skill of these musicians, the single is artfully produced. how involved are you in the mixing process?

holly: My producer does the most of the actual mixing however I am hands on in the entire process. I laid down vocal arrangements and ideas, and edits. Chris Brush, my producer / mix engineer certainly contributes ideas and his input. So collaborative. I am very intentional in the mix process around sound levels, etc, as serious (if not more). I also have a community of friend / music producers that I leaned upon to get their ears and feedback on the mix as well. Teamwork makes the dream work. :)

the single

High Road is performed and produced by a group of virtuousic musicians. The song feels familiar, solidly rooted in the traditional, but without a hint of cliche. The real treat here is Holly's lush, soulful vocals. Holly has a superb range. Powerful and subtle passages are handled with equal ease. The interweaving harmonies are supremely satisfying. It's such a joy to hear many Hollies singing at the same time! it feels like she's singing about my life, with her beautiful, heartfelt lyrics. Holly's gifts as a musician are only matched by her ability to deeply connect with her audience.

Holly Bruce is a rising star.

future plans

miri: do you have a big event planned for the record release?

holly: I plan to have a release early October! TBD I’ll be releasing those details around the campaign in April / May. STAY TUNED!

Holly is a very busy lady, currently recording background vocals for the coming album as well as writing new material, recording and performing and aims to place her music in TV & Film.
