Amazing Hmong indigo fabric with applique and cross-stitch!
The fabric is hand woven cotton that has been hand dyed using the wax resist (batik) method. The designs are drawn in wax on undyed cloth. The cloth is then dipped in indigo dye, removed, and allowed to dry. Over the next few weeks, the process is repeated several times until a deep blue shade is reached. The wax is removed and the amazing patterns are revealed.
See this post for a detailed explanation of this process and more about the Hmong peeps!
Appliques of ribbon and geometric shapes were hand sewn onto the finished piece, and a woven and cross-stitched border was attached. This thing is so ridiculously beautiful, it's hard to describe. The colors, patterns, feel, even the smell are amazing.
